South L.A. has a long-standing reputation as a food desert (a term that many in the community reject). After years of disappointment and false starts in attracting grocery stores to the area, the community has taken it upon itself to provide the fresh produce it needs. Through a combination of local legislation, education and a DIY mentality, advocates are taking a multi-pronged approach to produce.
